Travelling Back

Image
The eagle has landed: docked in Devonport Apart from all the sorting out, organising and packing, I take a walk down the driveway to check the eucalypt trees for koalas, with no results. But I do see a pair of crimson rosellas, which are beautiful. I can afford the time not to rush and when I do leave it's a little bit sad because it's been a beautiful place to stay and I think I'd like to come back. I would certainly like to explore more of Wilson's Prom.  It's raining intermittently all morning and as I drive, the state of my rear windscreen tells me my hopes of arriving in Hobart with a clean car are thwarted. Road spatter from passing vehicles is seeing to that. Bother.  It was clean yesterday afternoon... The South Gibson Highway is pleasant enough driving and I resist the temptation and invitation of the brown signs to explore their delights and mysteries. Another time maybe.  2 hours driving and I'm onto freeway and at a roadside service centr...

More of Wilson's Prom and orchid heaven

My first little excursion for the morning was taking my cup of coffee outside and surveying the gum trees for koalas, without success.  I rang the Foster police station and actually managed to talk to an officer who'll organise for somebody to come imminently and pick up the found wallet. 40 minutes later I give up on waiting for the police and put the wallet on the veranda table and head out -  just as the police are turning into the driveway. All good. I let him know where it is.   As I head into the park, I once again passed the signs warning international tourists to do the right thing including to drive on the correct side of the road and not to stop in the middle of the road to watch wildlife.  A sign in the toilet telling them to put used toilet paper down the pan rather than on the floor would also be useful.   I head out towards the Tidal Overlook Circuit and while I'm watching I am determined to do the first bit to the track junction without too much l...

Orchid Hunting at Wilson's Promontory

Small Spider Orchid - Caladenia Parva I am SO glad that I'm not camping. During the night, on and off, the rain was absolutely torrential. And I awoke to more of the same. Nor is it particularly warm and there is snow forecast down to 900 m. I retrieve my winter walking trousers from the car. Weird to think that a few days ago I was wondering if I could stay cool enough. It seems my original intent was to have diverted to all sorts of interesting spots yesterday on my way from Mallacoota but I didn't get round to that little bit of planning. Agnes Falls and Welshpool Long Jetty would have been good little diversions but I'm not going to backtrack to see them. And I don't think with the forecast weather that planning to see sunrise from Mount Nicoll is going to be particularly rewarding. I note there's a Foster Flora Reserve with some walks I might need to investigate. I just looked carefully at the Wilsons Prom maps, with little walks around Tidal River and Lily Pil...
